Cynthia Hagedorn

Now on Display! Cynthia Hagedorn's work inspired by this year's Rothbury festival the weekend of July 4 is now hanging. www.cynthiahagedorn.com . ARTIST'S STATEMENT As you stand before my work you may see images of color. To me, my works are pages from my journal. My art depicts ranges of emotions from complete joy and passion to the reminiscence of sadness. I paint each canvas in one sitting and follow what needs to be said and expelled from my journal. To you they may be squares. To me they are intricate words of color. Zambia, Africa

The HIV/AIDS pandemic has quickly become one of the worst problems facing the people of Sub-Saharan Africa. There is clear evidence that this disease is causing the decay of the economic and social well-being of the people who live there. With nearly 30 million people currently infected, countless unnecessary deaths occur every day. But one of the lesser-known consequences of this pandemic is that so many children become orphans from these needless deaths.

Within the country of Zambia, the prevalence of HIV / AIDS and the number of orphans is extremely high. The reduction of this disease has become a major focus of government and community groups there, and doors have been opened for outside aid to arrive. I recently had the privilege of traveling there and ministering with a group whose sole mission was to give help, even though some of us didn’t quite know how. But it was impossible for me to leave Zambia not affected with an urgent call to create awareness.

What follows in this exhibit is my attempt to bring attention to the plight of an often-forgotten group: the orphans of this horrible crisis. The sometimes haunting faces of these children show lives of sadness and a fear of what the future could bring without a family to support them. Their eyes reflect the desperation of a journey filled with experiences beyond what anyone their age should have been allowed to see.

But much to my surprise, these children were not consumed by despair. They were not confined within the doom of their future. Although many of them are infected with the HIV / AIDS virus themselves, they weren’t giving up. There was an overwhelming sense of hope and faith in a better future. Love and devotion to each other abounds without hesitation or reservation. They gather together and welcome each other with open arms. They expectantly pray to their God as if they just know help is on the way and deliverance is just around the corner. Every day, they embody the idea of unconditional love.

When the leaders of the International Bible Society began looking at how they could help, they were led to develop a new program for young people called Reach 4 Life. The program is centered around an abstinence-based education and focuses on a special book: a full NIV New Testament with extensive youth-friendly stories, games and tips for living.

Proceeds from this exhibit will go directly to the Reach 4 Life program in Zambia, ensuring that the lives of countless children will continue to be impacted in a positive way. The hopes and dreams of these children can live on through your support.

Kevin Bos, Bosman Photography

The focus of my business is making and securing memories. My motto is "From Images to Memories." Some moments in my life helped shape a clear desire to secure memories. That same desire translates into a passion to capture that for others. I have committed myself to and have been building upon that for the last couple of years. Check out BosmanPhotography.com for info to fit your wedding, engagement, senior, family, and event photography needs. Or call 616.886.7917.

Lindsey Leder and Sara Wassenaar

This fall, we have a variety of illustration-based pieces up by Lindsey Leder. There are also a few new pieces by Sara Wassenaar, as well as some photos by Emily Hunt and a piece by Anthony Cardinal. Lindsey hails from Colorado and is a senior at Hope College. While her background is in theatre set design, more recently she has been delving in other forms of design and illustration. Sara is a mixed-media artist, always trying to push her boundaries as an artist. See the previous feature for more on her. Emily is also a senior at Hope College studying photography and sculpture. Anthony is from Holland originally. He has consistently had pieces up in Lemonjello's since it opened and has become a favorite of the clientele.

Sara Wassenaar

"I prefer not to confine myself to boundaries of a conventional medium..." You can call it painting, drawing, photography, sculpture or collage, but it's art and I hope it makes you think. I was formally educated in ceramics and sculpture, graduated from Hope College in 2002 and am currently pursuing a career in art. "Representations" is an exploration of different ways to visually express a form. Some forms took only a few thoughtful minutes and others took hours to produce. I hope to raise questions about the validity of different modes of representation and hopefully call attention to subtle beauties in forms.
